Memories of my old haunts in the frozen wastes of the North of England never quite managed to conjure up much in the way of palm trees and warm seas… and certainly nothing there ever hinted at sipping a mojito and watching the sun go down from my hotel balcony while struggling to fight off the constant advances of some half-dressed local beauty queen (which unfortunately are in very short supply in Gateshead).
So one evening while eagerly waiting for a winning line at bingo and drowning my sorrows in a half of shandy, I let my imagination picture a rather different scenario, and so the storyline for Playa de las Americas came about.
Sadly (and more importantly) I missed hearing the winning bingo number… and by the time I got to that Tenerife beach some years later neither the beer nor the women were anywhere near cheap!
