Issue No.10 – Whenever Love Comes

After we’d had finished writing Dancing on the Moon we thought our contribution to the world of “soft” songs was over so we placed it gently in the OUT tray and went back to writing up-tempo numbers. So it came as no small surprise when one day Dave rolled up with another set of ‘weepy’ (he wasn’t too impressed with my choice of words) chords for me to take away in the vain hope that I would be able to come up with some more heartfelt lyrics.

Now you would think that writing a song about love should be easy but I have to tell you that I actually find it quite a challenge, especially when you’re trying to produce something that doesn’t rely too much on cliches or the same old stock phrases. Tennyson once coined the phrase “better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all” - but I remember Tommy Lee Jones in Men In Black coming back with “yeah… try it!”.

The fear of unrequited love is always waiting in the wings, that chilling feeling when you realise that you mean nothing to the person who means everything to you, that’s Whenever Love Comes.
