If my memory serves me well (unlikely) this was the first track we worked on for the album, and along with the rest of the songs this one was engineered by our very good friend Tony Arnold (now sadly passed away) at Courthouse Facilities in Cranbourne, Dorset.
The storyline for Like Refugees came about because at that time I was a huge fan of old (70’s) American road movies. Now just before you go trawling the web and grabbing the popcorn let me tell you that although some of these movies are regarded as classics by and large not too many of them end well for all those involved. In fact all too often the heroes (or heroines in the case of “Thelma and Louise”) meet sad fates in the final reel. Anyway, to my way of thinking, the overriding message that seemed to run through these movies was that the main characters were either escaping from or running to somewhere or something. Mind you, to be honest, when I look back now I’m not really sure that ‘refugees’ is the best description for those poor lost souls in the song. Although strangely enough in so many parts of our modern day world it seems to fit perfectly.
Keith.
